PM And National Out Of Touch Over Immigration

The Prime Minister made a stunning comment in Parliament today – he’s says he is happy 34,000 new migrants are moving to Auckland each year adding more pressure for demand for housing, education and health services, New Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“Mr Key stood by his statement ‘immigration settings were about right and the Auckland housing market would take care of itself.’

“This shows he and his government are out of touch.

“Everyone knows open door immigration is having a dire impact on this country and Auckland particularly, with added pressure on housing, jobs, health services and schools.

“Even Treasury warned the government six months ago of the effects of the current out-of-control levels of immigration which Mr Key and his ministers ignored.

“The government is also not worried that Immigration New Zealand shut down its verification team checking the validity of migrant’s skills.

“This team was doing important work which revealed from 2008 to 2015 that of 19,565 checks made, approximately 14,000 raised concerns as to the validity of the migrants’ qualifications.

“Of this total, 1779 were of major concern and 1102 migrants were clearly identified as giving false and misleading information.

“The problem is the government does not want to know the harsh reality of what is happening because of their open door policy, and that’s why they shut the verification team down,” Mr Peters says.
