The Te Ture Whenua Māori bill will be a significant piece of legislation affecting Māori land owners. Because of its importance for Iwi and all New Zealanders, Parliament’s Māori Affairs Select Committee has extended the timeframe to allow people more time to submit their thoughts and opinions on the bill.

The Te Ture Whenua Māori Bill considers what safeguards are in place for Māori to retain land as a taoka tuku iho. The bill also looks at enabling Māori land owners to make more practical decisions about how they utilize their land use.

The committee has extended the closing date for public submissions from 23 June to 14 July 2016. Both Māori and non-Māori can make a submission on the bill.

Tutehounuku Korako, Chair of the Māori Affairs Committee, says, “We hope New Zealanders of all ethnicities take the opportunity to tell us how they feel about the proposed new law. The committee intends to travel widely across Aotearoa to meet with submitters, kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) and to listen to what they have to say.”

Make your submission online before midnight Thursday 14 July 2016.
