Māori Party congratulates Robert Martin on making history at the UN
The Māori Party is thrilled that Robert Martin, who was nominated by former Co-leader Dame Tariana Turia, has become the first person with a learning disability to be elected as a member on to any United Nations Committee.
“His nomination and presentation to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was one of Tariana’s last significant campaigns as the Disability Issues Minister,” says Māori Party Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell.
“Tariana knows him well and was a great admirer of his work on disability issues,” he says.
Mrs Turia presented New Zealand’s nomination for Mr Martin at the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities held in New York in 2014.
Mr Martin will begin his three-year term on the UN Committee next year.
“We congratulate Mr Martin for this breakthrough selection,” says Māori Party Co-leader Marama Fox.
“His outstanding commitment to disability issues and his experience as a person who has lived a full life despite being born with a brain injury,” says Māori Party Co-leader Marama Fox.
“Aotearoa can be proud that his work has been recognised and we wish him all the best for his term with the United Nations.”
