Cash Demand For Supergold Card Off-Peak Travel Diabolical

Cash Demand For Supergold Card Off-Peak Travel Diabolical

The government is scrapping free off-peak travel for SuperGold Cardholders in Auckland from July 1and demanding cash for fares if Seniors don’t have a new smart card, says New Zealand First.

“National has fired a warning shot at Seniors, breaking the contract with them that is written into law for free off-peak travel using their favourite card,” says New Zealand First Leader and MP for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“It’s outrageous that the SuperGold Card will no longer be accepted on buses, trains and ferries in Auckland, and that holders will be asked to pay cash to board from July 1.

“The SuperGold Card is legal tender for an off-peak ride and they have no right to make holders pay cash.

“Let’s be clear, Auckland Transport and the government have bungled the switchover from the SuperGold card to a smart HOP card. The fault lies with the National government who made the directive.

“There are people standing in queues, being told to go away and come back with ID, and there is misinformation and confusion all over the city.

“The government should let Auckland Transport off the hook, and abandon the switch to smart cards.”
