Green MPs Catherine Delahunty and Jan Logie are proud to be taking part in a peace hikoi calling for greater understanding of the positive benefits of honouring Te Tiriti at all levels of governance.
“The hikoi challenges us to acknowledge historical and current injustices" Green Party Te Tiriti o Waitangi spokesperson Catherine Delahunty said.
“Andrew Judd was brave to call out the racism he was experiencing, and we all have a role to play to improve race relations in this country.
“Mana whenua are currently shut out of decisions over local issues, and we all lose as a consequence. I support Andrew Judd’s bravery in putting forward the proposal for a Maori ward,” Green Party local government spokesperson Jan Logie said.
“Māori are severely underrepresented at council tables around New Zealand, and it is important that mana whenua have the power to decide what happens in their rohe.
“It is fitting that we are walking to Parihaka the home of Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi, the home of non-violent resistance which inspired the world.
“Te Tiriti o Waitangi is the basis for peace and justice in Aotearoa New Zealand, and we need a nationwide conversation about how to honour the treaty at all levels in this country,” Ms Logie said.
