TVNZ Sell-Off Still on National’s List

Selling off TVNZ is still on the National government agenda in spite of denials, says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Broadcasting Tracey Martin.

“Both MediaWorks and TVNZ have been in talks which the prime minister has been informed about.

“He says a merger is ‘unlikely’ but it’s a fact that the National government has been grooming TVNZ for sale since October 1997 when then prime minister Jim Bolger said he would consider selling TVNZ.

“Mr Bolger said he could not see the advantages of the state owning a TV network that had no control other than paying bills and collecting profit.

“Minister of Broadcasting Amy Adams continues to deny a merger taking place but how can the public believe her when the National government prides itself on selling state assets,’’ Mrs Martin says.
