Green MPs to sleep in their cars this weekend
What: Green
MPs are taking part in #parkupforhomes, and will be sleeping
in cars to draw attention to the growing issue of
homelessness in Aotearoa.
Who:
Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei will be at the
Parliament event. Green Party MP Marama Davidson will be at
the Otara Town Centre
event.
When: 6pm, Saturday 25
June through to 6am, Sunday 26 June.
“I will be sleeping in a car tomorrow night at Parliament so that the Government knows that the homelessness crisis is at their doorstep,” Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei said.
“New Zealanders need an urgent and direct response to the country’s housing crisis to ensure that families have the homes they need.
“Every night, many New Zealanders have to sleep in cars, garages and on the streets, because they’ve got nowhere else to go,” said Mrs Turei.
Green MP Marama Davidson said “Sleeping in a car, for one night, is a small thing I can do to show homeless New Zealanders I care, and that, as an MP, I’m going to do everything in my power to speak out and speak up for them.”
The Green Party recently launched its Homes not Cars policy, which would reinvest Housing New Zealand’s dividend and tax into building more state homes.
