Killing: Charges Should Never Have Been Downgraded
New Zealand First says the downgraded manslaughter
conviction for the death of Moko Rangitoheriri reflects a
trend in New Zealand of political systems disguising the
real nature of crime.
“Not being honest about
crime in New Zealand leads to tragedy,” says New Zealand
First Leader and Northland MP Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“Contrary to National’s spin, crime is not down –
it’s up. All sorts of offenders are now being warned
rather than charged.
“Since 2008 the total number
of incidents police have attended is up 105,000 or more than
20 per cent. Meanwhile the number of people charged is down
3000.
“It looks good for the minister to trot out
that hackneyed line ‘crime is down’, but it is
misleading and endangers lives.
“This was a murder
of the very worst sort and the charges should have never
been downgraded.”

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik... More
