Crime on the rise…again!

Crime on the rise…again!

The Police Minister’s contention that Police have enough resources to meet the expectations of New Zealand communities is not reflected in the Police’s own statistics, says Labour’s Police spokesperson Stuart Nash.

“Yet again, reported burglaries have increased in every region across the country and nationally by 31% in May 2016 compared to the same time last year. That’s an increase of 1,422 burglaries taking the number up to 6,071.

“Robberies have also increased by 35%, public place assaults increased by 27% and serious assaults by 13%.

“In fact nine out of ten categories of crime that police record have increased and yet the five preventative activities aimed at reducing crime and victimisation have reduced.

“The police cannot continue to be asked to do more with less, because it isn’t working.

“This is a real concern considering the Police’s own strategic plan from 2016 to 2020 states that there will be no increase in police numbers for the next five years.

“Judith Collins will crow about Police budget increases for this year but the facts are clear 94% of the new money is to deliver the well-deserved wage increases for our men and women on the front line. There’s no new money for initiatives that tackle crime and Police have been underfunded by her Government by $300 million over the past four years.

“The Minister must provide the Police with the resources necessary to both prevent crime and catch the bad guys,” says Stuart Nash.
