Govt Fails to Protect New Zealanders From Melanoma Causing Devices
In the face of expert opinion the National government continues to advance half-measures in the fight against melanoma, says New Zealand First.
“The Health (Protection) Amendment Bill, which passed in Parliament today, is yet another example of a spineless government unprepared to take a firm stance on this known carcinogen,” says New Zealand First MP Ria Bond.
“There was no outright ban in the Bill on UV tanning services despite recommendations from the Cancer Society, the New Zealand Medical Council and the World Health Organisation.
“It defies common sense to allow UV sunbed use for over 18 year olds, when melanoma does not discriminate against age.
“This Bill risks driving the UV tanning industry underground, into homes where regulation is near impossible.
“New Zealand First abstained in the vote today as we do not support half-measures,” says Ms Bond.
