Crime on the increase yet again
Police Minister Judith
Collins’ contention that crime is falling has proven to be
wrong yet again, with latest Police statistics showing an
increase in most crimes, Labour’s Police spokesperson
Stuart Nash says.
“Figures for June 2016 show an increase in every crime category measured by police over the last year, bar one.
“They also confirm unresolved burglaries are rising – up 15.7 per cent, from 4,926 in June 2015 to 5,700 in June 2016.
“There are significantly more robberies – they’re up 28.2 per cent compared to a year ago.
“And it is hugely concerning that violent crimes have also increased, with public place assaults up by 13.1 per cent, dwelling assaults up by nearly 20 per cent and serious assaults resulting in injury up 7.3 per cent.
“This rise in crime is putting more stress and strain on a police force which has been told there will be no increase in staff until 2020. The Minister should stand up for our hard working police officers who are being asked to do more and more.
“In light of these new figures, it might be best that
Judith Collins ask Bill English for more funding. New
Zealanders need to feel safe and secure in the knowledge
that there are enough police officers catching all the bad
guys and keeping our communities safe,” says Stuart
Nash.
