Iwi
and Te Reo Tukutuku members finalised for Te Mātāwai
Māori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell said he was delighted that all iwi and Te Reo Tukutuku members of Te Mātāwai have been selected.
The Minister now has the job of appointing the final two members to the 13-member board which will lead te reo Māori revitalisation on behalf of iwi and Māori.
“Te Mātāwai demonstrates a new way for the Crown, iwi and Māori to work together in revitalising our taonga, te reo Māori. I’d like to congratulate each of the members and thank those who led the selection processes across the motu,” the Minister said.
“In making my appointments, I will be looking to complement the impressive set of skills on offer from the current members.”
“It will be a vibrant and dynamic board and I’m looking forward to working with members on ways in which we can help the Māori language to flourish.”
The final non-Ministerial appointments to the board have now been announced: Waihoroi Shortland (Tai Tokerau iwi) and Nuki Takao (Te Waipounamu iwi). They join nine other members already selected by iwi and reo tukutuku (Māori language stakeholder) clusters over the last two months.
The Minister expects to announce the two Ministerial appointments by the end of August.
Te Mātāwai’s roles will include nominating members to Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, Te Mānga Paho, and the Māori Television Service. It will also be responsible for developing the Maihi Māori – a new Māori Language Strategy for Māori which will complement the Crown strategy.
