Hudson Congratulates Leadership Award Winner

Hudson congratulates local Arts Access Corrections Leadership Award winner

Brett Hudson, National List MP based in Ōhāriu, has congratulated Arohata Prison for receiving the Arts Access Corrections Leadership Award at last night’s Art Access Awards at Parliament.

“I am delighted that Arohata Prison in Tawa has been recognised for its inmate rehabilitation efforts at last night’s ceremony,” says Mr Hudson.

“The Arts Access programme is hugely important in rehabilitating inmates as it helps them build and maintain healthy, collaborative relationships. Programmes like this play an important role in increasing inmates’ self-esteem and self-confidence by allowing them to share their own stories in a creative and safe environment.”

Funded through Creative New Zealand, Arts Access Aotearoa helps run five Arts For All networks throughout the country working closely with performing arts companies, galleries, museums, and venues to improve access to the arts for those who may experience barriers to participation.

“I met the Arts Access Executive Director, Richard Benge, last year and was impressed by the work him and his team were doing. I would like to acknowledge them for making our arts inclusive and accessible to all New Zealanders and to thank them for organising these awards.”

The organisation also has a contract with the Department of Corrections to advise on its arts programmes.

“My congratulations to Arohata Prison and all those involved with the programme for their recognition,” says Mr Hudson.
