Soaring Population Requires Urgent Brake on Immigration

Soaring Population Requires Urgent Brake on Immigration

“Out of control immigration is the direct cause of the largest ever annual increase of 97,300 in New Zealand’s population – it’s no wonder Auckland is bursting at the seams,” says New Zealand First Leader and MP for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“Over half of immigrants who flood here end up living in Auckland, many of them low-skilled, who just intensify competition for housing and health services, over-burden schools and add to the already choked motorways.

“And the statistics refute National’s claim that they are all New Zealanders coming home when three of every four making up the population increase are non-New Zealanders.

“Under National, none of the public services have been boosted – we have senior doctors who say they are working ‘trying to pump air into bald tyres’ and are stressed from work overload in a system that is constantly cost cutting.

“Into this stressed out system, with net migration of 69,100, we are adding a city almost the size of New Plymouth every year.

“And we’ve become a last ditch option for low-end immigrants who can’t get into the UK, Canada, or Australia.

“New Zealand First says we want immigration reduced to between 7000 to 15,000, and they must be people we need – not people who need us,” Mr Peters says.
