NZ Learning Trade with China Has Sting in Tail

More trade deals with China are blowing up in the government’s face in spite of their determined efforts to hush them up, says New Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“This is just bullying – we don’t mind standards being set, but when we try to regulate on dodgy steel China objects.

“China is set to impose tighter regulations on our honey and wine exporters which follows two Zespri shipments from New Zealand being rejected by the Chinese for having a ‘fungus’ that had not been a problem in the past.

“The shipments were rejected just as concerns were being expressed in New Zealand at the excessive dumping of cheap Chinese steel in New Zealand – some of which was found to be of sub-standard quality.

“The Key government presents trade with China as being great for the New Zealand economy but the true reality is now being revealed.

“No amount of spin from Mr Key and his government can disguise the fact that unless the deal cuts totally in favour of the Chinese – then there will be consequences.

“Beijing is calling the tune while in the Beehive, Mr Key and his cabinet colleagues dance,” Mr Peters says.
