Ratification okay but we need action
Today’s decision to ratify the Paris agreement on Climate Change by the end of the year is all well and good but where is the plan, says Labour’s Climate Change spokesperson Megan Woods.
“The Government’s failure to plan is planning to fail. We must have a plan if we are going to reach our Paris commitments.
“Under the agreement we have pledged to reduce our greenhouse emissions to 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030. Labour doesn’t think that this target is strong enough but we are prepared to talk to the Government to put in place their plan.
“We must have enduring and sustainable solutions to protect our economy from the shock of the transition to a low carbon economy.
“We invite the Government to look at our proposals for an independent climate commission and carbon budgeting.
“There has to be a plan post ratification to meet our targets. The gap between the Minister’s rhetoric and her actions is now a chasm,” says Megan Woods.
