PM’S Behaviour in House Will Disappoint New Zealanders
New Zealanders will be pleased at the Speaker’s ruling today ticking off the Prime Minister for acting improperly in the House on Wednesday, says New Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“The Speaker said correction by clarification on a subsequent day would not be acceptable – in other words trying to cover your tracks 24 hours later after stretching the truth in Parliament will not be tolerated.
“On Tuesday Mr Key provided factually wrong information in the House when he said less people are granted visas and then claim asylum now than under the Labour government of 1999-2008.
“He was wrong because no data had been collected on this matter prior to 2009 as the Minister of Immigration had confirmed.
“In Parliament on Wednesday, Mr Key said he had been talking in terms of proportions when he made his statement.
“This so-called clarification is a joke, but if it was to be made, then it should have been done in the House at the first available opportunity.
“He thought he would be able to avoid being held accountable for misinformation by switching the purpose of his answer. He got caught out.
“In fact he gave factually wrong information twice in Parliament.
“New Zealanders will be disappointed by Mr Key’s behaviour in the House,” Mr Peters says.
