National And Labour Block Public Child Sex Offender Register

National and Labour have blocked the opportunity for the child sex offender register to be made public, says New Zealand First.

At the committee stage reading of the Child Sex Offender Register Bill in Parliament both National and Labour spoke in support of the rights of offenders as a justification for not making the register public.

“It shows just how out of touch they are with public opinion,” says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Social Development Darroch Ball.

“Labour MP Louisa Wall said that a public register would ‘infringe on fundamental rights that we all have to protection of our privacy’.

“Parmjeet Parmar of National stated that ‘we have to balance the rights of the victims with the rights of the offender’.

“They have both failed to put the child’s right to protection ahead of an ideology that prioritises the offender’s rights to privacy,” says Mr Ball
