Minister Confirms Burglars Given Green Light
The
New Zealand public will be shocked to learn police have not
been required, officially, to attend burglaries, says New
Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt
Hon Winston Peters.
“This revelation has only come to light today with Minister of Police Judith Collins welcoming a police announcement that they would attend all house break-ins.
“New Zealanders know that often police do not turn up for a burglary, but they will be appalled that the government, who have severely under-resourced the police, have officially been giving burglars a virtual green light to go and rob their homes.
“It is a basic requirement that homes are protected and that people feel safe in their homes which is not happening under National.
“This decision has clearly not come from the police themselves, but from the Minister who is losing control of her portfolio and is embarrassed by the increasing numbers of reported burglaries.
“The minister must now explain to police just how they are going to do this extra work given the fact they don’t have enough officers and are already stretched to the limit.
“Unlike Minister Collins, New Zealand First understands the difficulties our police are working under and the first thing we would do is train and introduce 1800 new frontline police,” Mr Peters says.
