Weed Out the Cowboys, Put More Police on the Roads
It’s time for the trucking industry in Northland and the Police Minister to tell Northlanders how they are going to stop accidents, says Northland MP and New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“There’s too much tut tutting and not enough action. Weed out any cowboys for a start. Drivers who take risks, endanger the public and impair their employer’s business should be gone, they have no place on the roads.
“No doubt the police are fed up, because they don’t have the numbers and the resources to police dangerous driving before accidents happen.
“It's not at the clean-up end we need police, it's before the truck and trailer roll over or crash. We can talk about speeding on corners all we like but prevention is the name of this very serious roading issue.
“The National Government has responsibility on two counts – they have emasculated railways in the North, with a policy that even the trucking industry knows is a no brainer; second, they have failed to maintain police numbers to do their routine traffic surveillance jobs.
“Until there are more frontline men and women road traffic crime will continue.
“A watched driver is a safer driver.”
