Bill seeks to modernise transport laws

Bill seeks to modernise transport laws

The recently introduced Land Transport Amendment Bill aims to modernise the regulation of small passenger services, update the rules for heavy vehicles, and improve road safety laws.

The bill is currently before the parliamentary Transport and Industrial Relations Committee for consideration and is open for New Zealanders to have their say on. The public feedback received on the bill will help the committee to consider any recommendations it makes to the House of Representatives.

The bill aims to:

• reduce repeat drink driving offending by strengthening the legislation on alcohol interlocks

• give enforcement officers, other than the Police, greater powers to deal with fare evasion on public transport services

• increase penalties for drivers who fail to stop for the Police

• update the regulations on heavy vehicle regulation to align with recent changes to the Land Transport (Vehicle Dimensions and Mass) Rule 2002

• update the regulatory system for small passenger services

• make a range of amendments to the Land Transport Act 1998 to ensure that the Act is operating effectively.
