Bishop confirmed as National’s Hutt South candidate

Chris Bishop MP has been confirmed as the National Party candidate for Hutt South for the 2017 General Election.

Mr Bishop was elected to Parliament as a List MP at the 2014 election, where he cut the incumbent Labour MP’s majority from 4800 to 709, making Hutt South the second most marginal seat in the country.

“I’m a proud born and bred Hutt boy and I’m passionate about making the Hutt an even better place to live, work and play,” Mr Bishop says.

“Since being elected I’ve been working hard for Hutt South. I’ve opened two offices, including the first ever National office in Wainuiomata, and I run regular ‘Catch up with Chris’ sessions right around the electorate. I’ve been privileged to visit hundreds of Hutt businesses, community organisations, and our local schools.

“I’ve been proud to lead on important issues for Hutt residents, such as developing the Hutt into ‘Technology Valley’ – the home of high-tech jobs in science, engineering, and manufacturing. The National-led government has a huge focus on investment in science and innovation and the Hutt is perfectly placed to take advantage.

“I’m passionate about seeing our young people succeed. In 2015 I helped establish the Hutt City Youth Awards to shine a light on our talented young people, and I’ve enjoyed being involved in Young Enterpreise, MaiBiz, and other activities.

“Important transport projects for the Hutt are being delivered under National, such as the SH58 interchange upgrade. The Wainui Hill shared path has been significantly accelerated thanks to the government’s Urban Cycleway Fund. I will continue to advocate strongly for the important Cross Valley Link and Petone to Grenada roading projects.

“The Hutt is getting ahead under National and I’m looking forward to running a strong, positive campaign next year.”

Mr Bishop lives in Petone with his partner Jenna, and their cat, Buzz.
