Let’s work together to bring an end to family violence
White Ribbon Day today is an opportunity to talk openly about the impact family violence has on our local communities, and for all of us to do our bit to help end it, National candidate for Mt Roskill Parmjeet Parmar says.
White Ribbon Day is held annually on November 25 and aims to end men’s violence towards women.
“I’m a passionate advocate for victims of family violence. There is no excuse, no justification.
"I’ve seen the dreadful effects violence has on individuals, families and communities from my time volunteering to help victims, to my time as a Families Commissioner working on policy development in this area, through to my current position as a List MP on the Social Services Select Committee.
“As a leader in the Mt Roskill electorate, I will continue to stand up for local women and children who are in terrible situations to help bring an end to family violence.
“Not only is ending family violence the right thing to do, but it would also help to solve many other crime and safety issues in our community.
“41 per cent of police response time is spent dealing with family violence. This is far too high. Unfortunately though there is no simple fix.
“The National Government takes this issue seriously. It has a huge work programme underway to reduce the rate of family violence.
“I’ll continue to be a tireless advocate for this work on behalf of Mt Roskill women and children, and all victims nationwide.”
