Christchurch Needs More And Better State Housing

Denis O’Rourke MP
New Zealand First
Spokesperson for Housing

25 NOVEMBER 2016

CHRISTCHURCH NEEDS MORE AND BETTER STATE HOUSING

Christchurch City Council’s Otautahi Community Housing Trust should not be sucked into buying 2500 state houses the government wants to flog off in the city, says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Housing Denis O’Rourke.

“The trust should concentrate on improving its own portfolio while the government must shoulder its responsibilities and provide funding for Housing New Zealand so they can build more and better rental homes in Christchurch.

“We already have distressing levels of child poverty and homelessness in Christchurch and New Zealand which will only worsen as a result of the government’s flawed policies.

“Christchurch needs a large base of state rentals to ensure sufficient affordable rental homes are available for low income families.

“Selling state houses does not add any new rental homes, nor does it mean upgrades that are needed will take place.

“Instead of selling 2500 state houses in Christchurch, the government needs to upgrade them and build more,” Mr O’Rourke says.
