Foster-Bell welcomes assistance for quake affected Wellington businesses.
National List MP for Wellington Central Paul Foster-Bell welcomes today’s announcement from Hon Steven Joyce and Hon Anne Tolley that the employee support subsidy for quake affected business has been extended to include those in Wellington who have been prevented from operating due to the November 14 earthquake.
“A small number of businesses have been completely unable to operate since the earthquake due to being within cordons, and being unable to move their fittings and stock to a vacant location. This package is for them. They are a valued part of the Wellington economy and this package will help to ensure they can make it through these very tough circumstances,” said Foster-Bell.
“We are determined to do everything we can to make sure these businesses are looked after. In these unsure times we need to support each other and work together. Traits like these make Wellington the coolest little capital in the world.”
The package will only apply to businesses like retail and hospitality which have been prevented from operating and will be unable to do so for some time.
The support subsidy will be at the same rate as for businesses in other areas. It will cover up to eight weeks at a rate of:
• $500 gross per week for a full time employee ($4,000 per person);
• $300 gross per week for a part time employee ($2,400 per person);
• It will not be subject to GST; and it will apply only for the period during which the company is prevented from operating, for example until the cordon is lifted.
“As I understand it, in Wellington Central this package will primarily apply to around 12 businesses on Molesworth Street and 15-20 on Tory Street. I urge all business owners affected to get in touch with the helpline,” said Foster-Bell.
Anyone requiring information and support should call the Government Helpline on 0800 779 997.
