Wave of support for Kiwibuild continues to grow

Apartment builder Ockham Residential has become the latest voice to call for the government to build affordable homes for Kiwi families to buy, says Labour’s housing spokesperson Phil Twyford.

“Helen O'Sullivan of Ockham has now joined prominent businesspeople like EMA chief executive Kim Campbell and the country’s biggest residential builder Mike Greer in calling for the government to start building houses.

“This is significant because Ockham are one of the most respected developers of medium density apartments.

“National has sat on its backside for too long while the housing crisis has worsened. 35% of New Zealanders now live in places where the average house costs over a million dollars.

“The size of the average first home loan has ballooned 43% in two years. Only a quarter of under 40s own their own home.

“The Kiwi dream of owning your own place is slipping away. Everyone can see that it’s time to build some bloody houses.

“Labour’s Kiwibuild Bill has been drawn. National needs to stop dragging its feet, back Labour’s plan, and help save the Kiwi dream,” says Phil Twyford.
