Corrections Department Needs to Get with the Times

The compensation that Corrections might need to pay to former prisoners with incorrect release dates could cost millions, says New Zealand First.

“Many former prisoners have discovered they could be eligible for claims, so each day the cost is going up.

“The possibility that 500 former prisoners could be claiming compensation should be worrying the government,” says Corrections Spokesperson Mahesh Bindra.

“In this day and age, New Zealanders expect our systems to be fiscally and technologically sound and world-class.

“New Zealand First believes that it is much cheaper and better to invest more in technology which could calculate release dates for prisoners correctly.

“Relying on obsolete systems such as calculators, pencils and an excel spreadsheets is so old-fashioned, inefficient and potentially costly to the taxpayer,” says Mr Bindra.
