Bishop backs Go by Bike Day

National MP Chris Bishop backed “Go by Bike” day in the Hutt today by racing Labour MP Kris Faafoi to Parliament from the Petone foreshore.

“Go by Bike day is all about promoting cycling as fun and healthy way to get around. Last year Trevor Mallard and I raced into town from the same spot, although it was a bit of an unfair fight with his experience on a high spec racing bike, and me on a more traditional mountain bike. This was a bit more even and it was nice to come out on top!

“Kris and I have a great relationship forged through co-captaining the Parliamentary cricket team and appearing on TVNZ’s Breakfast TV programme for over a year now. It was good to team up with him to back this fun event, now in its 22nd year.

“I’d like to apologise to all viewers of Breakfast for the shots of Kris and I in our shorts on the Parliamentary forecourt this morning!

“Cycling is good for our health and good for the environment. Cycling investment is at record levels under this government, thanks to our Urban Cycleways Fund. The Wainui shared path is getting underway this year and progress is being made on the Beltway project, the important Eastern Bays Shared Path, and the Petone to Ngauranga section of the cycleway into Wellington.

“The ultimate dream is of course the Great Harbour Way project - a 67km shared pedestrian and cycle path around the shoreline of Wellington.
