Great News on Forest of Tane

7 March 2017

DUNNE WELCOMES FOREST OF TANE DECISION

Ohariu MP Hon Peter Dunne has welcomed the Wellington City Council’s decision to purchase Tawa’s Forest of Tane to preserve it for the recreational enjoyment of local people.

“This is great news and I am delighted at the outcome.

“I congratulate Northern Ward Councillors Malcolm Sparrow, Jill Day and Peter Gilberd for their advocacy on behalf of local people to secure the Wellington City Council’s support to purchase the block to prevent it falling into the hands of developers,” he says.

Mr Dunne says the Forest of Tane is effectively the northern most point of the Wellington City Town Belt and is already a popular recreation place for local people.

“The purchase provides a great opportunity to further develop the tracks and infrastructure of the Forest to become an even more important recreational amenity for Tawa people, and people right across Wellington.

“The Friends of Tawa Bush group has worked constantly to protect and promote the Forest and they also deserve to be congratulated for their tireless work and advocacy.

“This is the best of outcomes all round,” Mr Dunne says.
