Matariki Tu Rākau – in remembrance

Associate Agriculture Minister Meka Whaitiri welcomes the launch of Matariki Tu Rākau – a tree planting programme in recognition of those who have served with the New Zealand Defence Force.

“On Sunday, I accompanied Forestry Minister Shane Jones to the official launch of the One Billion Trees planting programme, where we planted five native trees at Manutuke School in Te Tairāwhiti – the first of the One Billion Trees planting programme,” Meka Whaitiri said.

“In doing so he kept his promise to Te Tairāwhiti when he launched the Provincial Growth Fund earlier this year. We travelled up to Te Araroa to talk with Māori land owners about the potential of forestry and agriculture opportunities.

“At this time of year, we take time to remember our men and women that contributed to the war effort. We also acknowledge the Māori Battalion; the impact they had, as well as our loss.

“This Government initiative will see mostly native trees planted as part of our ambitious target to see one billion trees planted over the next ten years.

“I encourage our Māori communities, marae, kohanga reo and kura kaupapa, and iwi to get involved to plant trees in recognition of our fallen soldiers, as well as all those that serve our country,” Meka Whaitiri said.
