Govt must commit to new Melling Interchange

2 May 2018

MP for Hutt South Chris Bishop is calling on the new Government to commit to a new and upgraded Melling interchange.

“The Melling interchange is a major choke point on State Highway Two, particularly at peak times, and can pose a safety risk. That’s why National committed to fast-tracking a new and upgraded grade-separated interchange and a new bridge across the Hutt river.

“I’m calling on the new Government to match National’s commitment and get on with this vital project for the Hutt.

“Mayor Ray Wallace and I agree that a new interchange at Melling is the number one transport priority for the Hutt. It is vital for the delivery of the Riverlink project and overwhelmingly supported by Hutt residents and motorists.

“An upgrade at Melling has been put at risk by the coalition Government’s new draft transport Government Policy Statement, which proposes cutting billions from state highways.

“I urge people to show their support for this project by signing the petition online atwww.chrisbishop.co.nz/melling.

“National remains committed to the new interchange at Melling and a new bridge across the river. The Government needs to come to the party and commit to this important project for the Hutt Valley.”
