Kiwis Can’t Trust Nats on Stealth Tax Hikes

National’s apparent u-turn on 'bracket creep' shows it can’t be trusted to stick up for taxpayers, according to ACT Leader David Seymour.

Amy Adams tried to catch Grant Robertson out today when he appeared before the Finance and Expenditure Committee.

“Due to inflation and the inaction of both Labour and National governments, the average income earner will pay the top tax rate in 2022.

“National’s new position is just another example of its tendency to campaign from the right and govern from the left.

"In 2004, John Key lampooned the Labour for their refusal to end bracket creep.

"The government he led then did nothing, taking an extra $2.1 billion from the taxpayer between 2011 and 2017 as inflation pushed Kiwis into higher tax brackets. This cost the average household $2500.

"Now the Nats are back to campaigning against stealth tax hikes, showing they cannot be trusted.

"It is outrageous that an average income earner could end up paying the top tax rate and National’s flip-flopping beggars belief”, says Mr Seymour.
