Govt should prioritise vulnerable NZers, not unions
Revelations that Government Ministers have stopped efforts to get hundreds of unemployed New Zealanders into work in order to aid an industrial dispute is extremely disturbing, National’s Social Development spokesperson Louise Upston says.
“Reports that MSD has apologised for trying to help unemployed New Zealanders into jobs as bus drivers after the intervention of Labour Ministers and heavying from unions undertaking strike action is incredibly concerning.
“Their reason for stopping, that there is ongoing industrial action by bus drivers, is worse. MSD’s obligation is to unemployed New Zealanders not Labour’s union members.
“New Zealanders should have faith that their Government is working in all their best interests, not just those of their union mates.
“It is not the Government’s role to act as union muscle. It’s no wonder New Zealand is beset by industrial action.
“The Government has real questions to answer around why it is prioritising union members over unemployed New Zealanders who are willing to go to work to turn their lives around.”
