MEDIA STATEMENT

Export Growth David Parker is travelling to Singapore to participate in a Ministerial meeting of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

“RCEP negotiations are intensifying at the moment and this meeting will be a critical opportunity to move negotiations forward.

“I will be looking to ensure that the agreement supports employment and opportunity throughout New Zealand society, while also safeguarding the things that New Zealanders hold dear,” David Parker said.

“RCEP is part of a trade negotiations agenda that is integral to the Government’s moves to modernise our economy and support businesses and exporters in the face of economic headwinds internationally.

“Plurilateral agreements like RCEP have grown in importance in light of the rising tide of protectionism,” David Parker said.

The RCEP negotiations were launched in November 2012 and comprise 16 countries: New Zealand, Australia, the 10 countries of ASEAN (the Association of South East Asian Nations), China, India, Japan and South Korea.
