Green Party welcome first step to abortion law reform

26 October 2018

Green Party MP Jan Logie has welcomed the Law Commission’s briefing on alternative approaches to abortion law.

“At the moment in New Zealand abortion is treated like a justice issue instead of a health issue.

“Women are forced to jump through hoops to get an abortion. Our law doesn’t reflect contemporary values and creates inequalities and unnecessary delays. The current 40 year old abortion law is just not working.

“We want to see abortion laws that reflect the needs of people seeking to terminate a pregnancy, and recognise the importance of women’s bodily autonomy.

“The Green Party trusts women to make decisions about what is best for themselves and their whānau. As well as changing the law, we are also committed to ensuring women in all parts of New Zealand have access to these necessary health services when they need them.

“We commend the Law Commission for their work in setting the frame for this important discussion.

“The Green Party looks forward to progressing this reform as part of a Government that seeks to improve the wellbeing of New Zealanders”.
