Climate Change Minister James Shaw:

“The negotiations are still going here in Katowice. That’s not unusual at COPs, and I’m confident we will get there.”

“This is my third COP but it’s very different this time, being asked to co-facilitate*. If you thought negotiating a three-way coalition government was difficult, try negotiating with 190 countries where each of them has a veto over the result.”

“In terms of what it means at this point. It’s too early to say. What I do know is that the Polish Presidency is working hard to get a result from Katowice which has high integrity.”

*Editor’s note:
Minister Shaw’s reference to “co-facilitate” is about he and Chile’s representative co facilitating negotiations around setting up a framework to allow countries to cooperate between each other on carbon markets to help meet emissions reduction targets while ensuring those cooperating arrangements and markets have environmental integrity.
