Hokianga harbour a key priority for Waitangi: Green Party
Reducing pollution at the sacred Hokianga Harbour will be a key priority for the Green Party at Waitangi.
Green Co-leader Marama Davidson will be addressing the Hokianga hikoi and discussing the issue with iwi throughout the three days.
“The Hokianga Harbour is sick and needs our urgent attention.
“Hokianga is my homeland, I grew up swimming in and eating from the harbour. Every year I return home and feel how deeply precious its water is. It is our lifeline.
“I’ll be at Waitangi to represent the tangata whenua and Hokianga locals who are calling for help to save the precious waters of the Harbour.
“Pollution from more and more holiday homes, combined with ageing waste water infrastructure, is threatening the life-giving essence of Hokianga waters.
“The Green Party understands that water is life and we want a New Zealand where rivers and lakes are safe to swim in and gather food from.
“We will be focussing on this during the course of Waitangi and beyond”.
