The Green Party welcome new healthy homes standards that are a step towards renters have a warm, dry, safe home.

“At the moment, housing standards to protect our renters – including elderly and kids – are just not fit for purpose”, Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson said today.

“New Zealanders agree across the board that no-one should have to live in a home that makes you sick.

“That is why I am thrilled that as part of our Confidence and Supply Agreement, the Green Party have worked with Labour to achieve a major increase in standards required for a healthy home.

“There will need to be proper insulation that meets the Building Code or has a minimum thickness of 120mm. Draughts will need to be blocked. Required extraction fans or rangehoods in kitchens in bathrooms will ensure homes are dry. I’ve lived in a house where the damp is unrelenting and mould made my kids sick. We can do so much better than this and this is exactly what this Government is doing.

“A warm, dry, safe, home for renters. This is what it is like to show genuine care for New Zealanders.

“I am so proud of the changes we have managed to achieve in Confidence and Supply with Labour, who have been very receptive to this work. We will continue to work constructively with them to ensure a better standard of living for renters”.
