Petone to Grenada effectively cancelled

Petone to Grenada effectively cancelled

MP for Hutt South Chris Bishop says today’s project update from the NZTA confirms that the important Petone to Grenada Link Road (P2G) is now effectively cancelled.

“The project was re-evaluated following the publication of the new Government Policy Statement on Transport released in early 2018, which stripped $5 billion from State Highway funding.

“Finally in April 2019, many months later, we have the results of the evaluation, which has essentially concluded:

• The P2G road will not be going ahead in its current proposed form
• Further investigation work is to be done on “other east-west options across the state highway network in the triangle formed by SH1, SH2 and SH58.”
• Right now, funding is not available to progress work on this project.

“The project update is wordy, but if you read between the lines the project is essentially cancelled which is terrible news for the Hutt.

“P2G would significantly add to regional roading resilience in Wellington, while unlocking productivity and commercial opportunities for the Hutt Valley. It would also ease congestion for residents of the Hutt traveling to and from Wellington.

“It’s a vital project for the future of the Hutt Valley, and needs to link to the Cross Valley Link project.”

“The Transport Agency now needs to urgently release the results of the Melling Interchange improvements re-evaluation. National campaigned on fast-tracking this important project at Election 2017; but like P2G the project has been being “re-evaluated” since the change of government.

“The NZTA has made a decision on this project but has so far refused to publish the decision, and the re-evaluation. They need to just get on with it.”
