Old man holds country hostage for 17 months, expects
thanks
“The idea that New Zealanders should thank
Winston Peters for saving them from a capital gains tax
would be laughable if it weren’t so serious”, says ACT
Leader David Seymour.
“It's like thanking a kidnapper
for releasing you.
“In October 2017, Winston Peters
condemned capitalism and chose a left-wing coalition that
had campaigned on a capital gains tax. Peters’ belief that
capitalism was a ‘failed economic experiment’ drove him
into the arms of socialists.
“He then allowed the Tax
Working Group to put taxpayers through 17 months of
anxiety.
“Then, when opinion polls told him that a
capital gains tax was desperately unpopular, he decided to
pull the plug.
“Far from being a hero, Peters is the
real villain in this story.
“Winston Peters and NZ First
delivered New Zealand a left-wing government, and created
massive economic uncertainty over a capital gains tax, and
voters shouldn’t let them forget
it.”

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik... More
