Mokomoko Pardon one step closer with Bill introduced into the House

“In another step towards restoring the character, mana and reputation of Mokomoko and his descendants and restoring the relationship between the Crown and Te whānau a Mokomoko, the Mokomoko (Restoration of Character, Mana and Reputation) Bill will be introduced in the House today”, announced the Minister of Māori Affairs, Hon Dr Pita Sharples.

“The Bill will give effect to an agreement I signed on behalf of the Crown, with Te whānau a Mokomoko on 28 September 2012 at Waiaua Marae in Opotiki. “

The Bill will provide statutory recognition of the 1992 free pardon for the tupuna Mokomoko in relation to the murder of the missionary Carl Sylvius Volkner in 1865.

Dr Sharples said that “the signing of the agreement and introduction of legislation are significant milestones towards restoring the character, mana and reputation of Mokomoko and his descendants. It is also a step towards restoring the relationship between the Crown and Te whānau a Mokomoko and I am honoured to have played a key role in this restoration process with the whānau and on behalf of the Crown”.

"I look forward to when the Bill has its first reading in 2012."
