Labour MPs support public call to stop CCDHB home help cuts
Labour MPs Kris Faafoi and Charles Chauvel today received a petition calling for legislation to stop the Capital and Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) from implementing cuts to support for elderly Wellingtonians
“I was sad to have to receive this petition. It reinforces the concerns already expressed to me by people in the Northern Suburbs and Western Hills who are gravely concerned about cuts to home help”, said Charles Chauvel, Labour List MP based in Ohariu.
Lynne Allen, a local resident, presented the petition of over 500 elderly citizens in Johnsonville, Tawa and the Kapiti Coast, requesting that legislation be passed to ensure that there will be no reduction in community health services.
“Cutting funding for home help and elderly support is bad policy”, said Kris Faafoi, MP for Mana. “It’s also bad economics: it’s much more cost-effective to help people stay in their own homes than to see them hospitalized or have to go into care elsewhere”.
Labour MPs have met with the CCDHB to request an explanation after reports of the CCDHB cutting home help funding by 30% over the past two years.
