David Shearer: A new New Zealand

Labour Leader David Shearer has today set out his vision for creating a new New Zealand with a strong, clever and creative economy and a world-class education system that gives all Kiwis the opportunity to succeed.

“We need to make a new New Zealand. That’s what the next Labour government will be about. We must change the path we are on because at the moment we’re headed in the wrong direction. That will take guts and determination.

“I’m not content with merely managing our decline. We owe too much, we earn too little and too many of our eggs are in one basket.

“The future of our economy lies in creating high-value export businesses, innovative industries, new and better markets and educating our young people so they can lead the way.”

In the first of a series of speeches, David Shearer focused on creating a world-class education system to drive New Zealand’s economy.

“Our goals for education are ambitious. Every child in New Zealand must have access to the best teachers and schools. They must be given every opportunity to succeed.

“We must use our skills and talent to create a stronger economy and to make our clean, green brand a reality. The same old ideas aren’t going to cut it. We need 21st century solutions.

“Every policy and programme has to measure up to the challenge of transforming New Zealand. If it does, we will go with it. If it doesn’t, out it goes. We will work with all Kiwis to find the best ideas for our future.

“We’ll also work to make sure all New Zealanders get a fair go. We believe in helping people out when they’re in trouble but in return we expect them to be involved and contribute to our growth.

“Today’s speech is just the beginning. There is much more to come.

“The new New Zealand we build will be a place where people know they can get ahead. It’ll be a place where the rest of the world wants to live. A place that we can all be proud of,” said David Shearer.
