It is with sadness that the Māori Party joins with the Te Whare family, Ngāti Tahu and Ngāti Whaoa in mourning the loss of Rawiri Te Whare.
“I remember Rawiri in his career at Waiariki Institute of Technology when he was called upon to fill the shoes of pakeke Hiko Hohepa in continuing the development of Māori Studies there,” says Te Ururoa Flavell, MP for Waiariki.
“His calling after this was to assist iwi in the completion of the historic Central North Island Forests Land Collective Settlement known as the CNI – an amazing achievement in forestry settlement involving over 100 claimant groups.”
“It is no mean feat to pull together iwi and negotiate a deal of $85 million whilst acknowledging the unique circumstances of each iwi. For that he will be remembered.”
“Ngāti Tahu, Ngāti Whaoa, tae noa atu ki te whānui o te waka o Te Arawa, maringi ana a te waikamo i te hingahinga. Moe mai rā e koro.”
