Sharples farewells Sir Paul Holmes
Dr Pita Sharples, Co-Leader of the Maori Party, is mourning the loss of Sir Paul Holmes, whom he calls a great New Zealander, and a good friend.
Dr Sharples said “it is with great sadness that I learned of Sir Paul Holmes passing today. He has been a special friend of mine, supporting me in all my endeavours.”
“He was there to support the establishment of the urban marae at a time when not many Maori and Pakeha did; he supported the establishment of Kura Kaupapa Maori as a bona fide education model; and we also shared a special love for the Hawkes Bay which was always a point of connection.”
“In return, Sir Paul had my absolute support and friendship in his activities and actions.”
Dr Sharples said “he was an extraordinary commentator, interviewer, never afraid to push the envelope, and often with his trademark impish sense of humour.”
“He was undoubtedly a great New Zealander. He loved his family, and he loved us as well. My thoughts are with his whanau and friends who are mourning at this time.”
“Kei te rangatira, kei te hoa, haere i te mohio kua arohatia koe. Haere ki te okioki ki te mano ki te tini. Koutou ki a koutou, haere.”
