Labour values Pacific relationships

A well-monitored, appropriate increase in Pacific workers coming to New Zealand under the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme would be greeted positively by Labour say Labour’s Pacific Island Affairs spokesperson Su’a William Sio, and Immigration spokesperson Trevor Mallard.

“The Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme was introduced by the last Labour government despite opposition from the National Party,’’ said Trevor Mallard.

“Labour agrees that once Fiji has returned to democracy it should be able to participate in the RSE scheme.

“Pacific workers have made great contributions to the primary sector through this arrangement.

"Just as Labour will continue to protect and support the Samoa and Pacific access quota system, we would welcome an appropriate, well-monitored increase under the RSE scheme.

“This would need to be subject to monitoring to ensure there is no worker exploitation and that New Zealanders are not available to do the work,’’ Trevor Mallard said.

“This move would continue build on the historic and highly-valued ties between New Zealand and Pacific peoples that the Labour Party has done so much to foster,’’ said Pacific Island Affairs spokesperson Su’a William Sio.

“Contrary to some recent scaremongering and politicking, we value highly our friendship with the Pacific migrant community who make a very significant contribution to New Zealand’s economy and society.

“Sadly, it appears that New Zealand’s Prime Minister is using an official international visit to play politics.’’
