No Compromise on Street Prostitution

No Compromise on Street Prostitution

Moving prostitutes off the streets is the only solution to the problems of prostitution – compromises will not work, says Spokesperson for Social Policy/Welfare and Manukau East candidate Asenati Lole-Taylor.

“New Zealand First’s Prostitution Reform (Control of Street Prostitutes and Their Clients) Amendment Bill offers a strong plan to move prostitution into licensed brothels.

“New Zealand First acknowledges attempts by MP Ross Robertson to push for a response on prostitution through an interim report on the Manukau City Council (Regulation of Prostitution in Specified Places) Bill currently before the Local Government and Environment Select Committee.

“Many of the community problems we are facing today in Papatoetoe, South Auckland, stem from Labour’s decision to legalise prostitution in 2003. Now Mr Robertson is trying to make up for their mistakes.

“Unfortunately, his bill will not be effective because it does not go far enough to close the loopholes created by the Prostitution Reform Act 2003, which has allowed bad behaviour by sex workers and their clients to take place for far too long.

“Limiting street prostitution to particular roads or places will do nothing to increase the safety of residents.

“Street prostitution is a severe issue in the Manukau East electorate and it’s a shame that more could not be done by the Government to help those constituents and others like them living in communities where street prostitution is a serious problem, such as Manchester Street in Christchurch.

“We do not believe it’s enough to say sex can still be sold on the streets in designated areas. The community will eventually be exposed to daylight pornography if we go down that track.

“Our Bill makes no compromises. The New Zealand public can be sure that New Zealand First will make a stand for them on this issue,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
