Simon Bridges: More investment in our regions

More investment in our regions

This week we announced we’re going to accelerate another four regionally significant roading projects in Taranaki, Gisborne, and Marlborough.

I’m delighted to let you know this week we announced we’re going to accelerate another four regionally significant roading projects in Taranaki, Gisborne, and Marlborough.

They’re part of the accelerated regional roading package we announced in 2014 to speed up the delivery of transport projects considered important to regions.

This latest announcement brings the total number of projects committed to across New Zealand to 13. Five of them are already either underway or finished.

The further four projects announced this week, with funding of up to $115 million, are:

• Awakino Gorge Tunnel bypass (Taranaki, $9-15m)

• Mt Messenger bypass (Taranaki, $80-90m)

• Motu Bridge replacement (East Coast / Gisborne, $3-5m)

• Opawa Bridge replacement (Marlborough / Blenheim, $14-17.5m)

Each year, in total around $3.6 billion is invested in transport around the country.

The National-led Government is working hard across the country to support our regions by investing heavily in important infrastructure. That‘s because modern infrastructure is the lifeblood of a growing economy.

We’re investing in things like regional roading projects, ultra-fast and rural broadband, water storage and irrigation, building new schools and classrooms, and building cycleways.

This Government is committed to supporting and investing in our regions to help regional economies diversify and develop, and to help them get ahead.

Hon Simon Bridges
