Foster-Bell is Critical of Overbearing Medical Officer

National List MP Paul Foster-Bell criticised the medical officer of health after news that a prominent inner-city New World faced losing their liquor license over the placement of liquor isles.

‘This kind of nanny state mentality is an unnecessary use of government regulation, which risks pushing our vibrant city in the direction of the extreme tight restrictions seen in cities like Sydney today’ said Mr Foster-Bell.

As the National Party representative keen to see the development of Wellington as a centre for positive events and nightlife, Paul sees the actions taken by the medical officer as beyond the intention of the law emplaced in 2012 around liquor licensing.

‘Liquor sales in Wellington make strong contributions not only to supermarkets, but our tourism industry, jobs in bars and our growing craft brewery industry. This busybody should stop focusing on minute details of which isle alcohol is sold in, and get back to the real health issues facing New Zealanders’.
