Dome Valley Road Safety Improvements Great News for Rodney

Dome Valley Road Safety Improvements Great News for Rodney

The Government is taking serious action on road safety, and it is good news that Dome Valley is one of the first dangerous stretches of highway to benefit from multi-million dollar improvements, says Rodney-based List MP Jenny Marcroft.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter today launched the Safe Network Programme with a $36.2 million project to improve safety on the SH1 between Wellsford and Warkworth. It will include flexible median safety barriers between lanes to prevent head-on crashes, wide centreline and shoulder. Work will start in February and is expected to take three years to complete.

Joining the Ministers for the announcement at the Top of The Dome, Ms Marcroft said that the planned improvements would cut fatalities and injuries on this notorious stretch of road.

The Government is investing $4.3 billion over the next three years to reduce deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads through the 2018–21 National Land Transport Programme (NLTP).

This is a 37 percent increase on what was spent under the last National Government, Ms Marcroft said.

“I am proud to be part of this Government which is taking road safety seriously and working to save lives. Our road toll is far too high, and the design of our highways is part of the problem.

“The Dome Valley road was not built with the current levels of traffic in mind and it is great to see that it has been identified as one of the top priorities for investment and improvement.”
